After what seemed like an eternity, PLO has finally been introduced to Macau. Let the carnage begin.
After years of waiting and anticipation, Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) has been formally introduced to Macau. The Macau Gambling Commission recently added the game to its approved list, and the Wynn Macau began spreading HK$25/50 PLO cash games on November 7 this year. It is only a matter of time before the poker rooms at StarWorld and the Grand Lisboa follow suit. Baller gives you the insight to this long-time favourite of gamblers in the United States.
Omaha was relegated to the sidelines of the poker world throughout most of the Noughties, thanks to the online explosion which saw No Limit Hold’em becoming the game of choice. With players getting only two hole cards, Hold’em is very easily to follow, and as such, it quickly proved to be hit on TV. Poker was the second-most viewed sport on American TV, right after NFL.
With online poker getting tougher and tougher, Omaha has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, precisely because battle-hardened poker players, desensitised to the value of money, started finding the action far more exhilarating.
Omaha has largely remained in the shadow of Hold’em because the latter is easy to learn and also makes for very entertaining viewing on TV. This means there are still tons of bad Omaha players around, and a lot of money to me made provided that you manage to grasp the fundamental concepts of the game.
Because of the nature of the game, PLO often generates much wider action than Hold’em, giving you far higher returns on your money if you can stand the swings. PLO favours gamblers rather than grinders. You can’t be a nit and expect to clean up in Omaha. That means that in Omaha you’re going to find yourself up against opponents who are willing to gamble – and if you get your money in as a favourite most of the time, you stand to make some really serious money in the long run.
