Donkey calls
« on: June 27, 2011, 08:35:46 PM »
Since donkey calls and donkey callers will always be a part of poker, why don't we share stories of some donkey calls we made during a cash game or tourney. :D

Umpisahan ko na..cash game @ metro about a year ago,I was on a lucky streak then, from a 300 buy in, I was lucky enough to raise it to 3k in less than 2 hours..anyway,here is one of my donkey calls during that day,I was BB,utg went all in pre flop (around P400),all folded and I checked my cards, saw Jd7d,told myself that I wanna test my luck,I called.flop came  J37, turn 7 river A..utg showed pocket queens and when I showed my J7,the player was visibly upset and said "grabe naman yung pinang call mo sa akin" and walked away.the guys beside me told me that it was a lucky donkey call on my part.I just smiled and said "suited kasi e." donkey call indeed.. ;D
...time to shine...;)

called a raise to 250 on SB with 3d7d. 4 way pot. flop was 777.  :D Checked around. The turn was an Ace. raised the pot on the turn and went all in on the river. Was paid off by AK.

Ano ba yung talaga ang donkey?

Ano ang mas donkey: calling a big raise with 89off or raised in postion without looking at cards then was re-raised tapos call pa din?

Sa first scenario ang flop 888 sa second hole cards turned out to be Q7off and flop was Q77. Same opponent both times but different days. Stacked both times.

Di ko lang sure kung classified ba as donkey call kung mag open-shove ka ng KJ 3-handed..  Nasaan ang "call" dun..

Yung 99 naman nya vs JJ di ko rin makita donkey call kasi wala pang flop nun di ba..  Preflop labanan..  Pwera siguro kung may reraising war at ang hawak nya e low card combos..

Even if you are younger I would like to refresh your memory, we played countless times already.  The most memorable of which i am forever grateful to you is last 4 players in satellite for 3 FPT seats, you were chip leader and I was almost to be blinded out.  It was Feb 2009, during the bubble time i was shock my very young good looking ADMU niece passed by our table game with a boy companion which is unacceptable to me and subsequently reprimanded my brother for letting it happen.  To my surprise, you suddenly bust-out and nobody willing to buy my seat worth 25k.  The rest is history, i had to relinquish my FPT responsibility and survive all the way to 7th place at the Perfect 10.  I made a strong play with 2nd TP (King), A44, K, T but my shove against the chip leader and eventual champion could not convince him to fold the rivered straight QJ.
Almost weekly i do get busted with TP of AKQJ, the other night got crippled at LAPS small blind Ace low against big blind set 3 on the turn Axx,3,x by a 'value shove' on the river!

I made a call about a month and a half ago after the guy to my right raised and he had over 3k behind at the 10-20 table i had 3h5h and called his raise with a little over 4k behind.  Heads up flop was A55 rainbow.  Needless to say i bet all streets and felted him by river.  After the hand he called me a donkey for about 20min lol i didnt mind since i had a huge stack but of course i called for the huge implied odds and i actually sat at that table and that seat right beside him in position for that exact scenario

A story of donks

P1 raise 4k, P2 calls 4k, P3 re raise
P1 shoves, P3 out of turn calls, P2 chip leader decides to call too
P1 AK, P2 Jh 9h, P3 AA
FLOP: 10h 8h 7x, P2 straight
TURN: 7h, P2 straight Flush
RIVER: x
P1 P3 out

bubble time:
FLOP: Jxx
P4 JJ shoves with big stack overbet do not want callers, Chip leader same P2 calls with Q8
TURN: 9
RIVER: 10, P4 out

FINAL TABLE 9 PLAYERS( top 3 ITM, 4th to 9th zero cash but seat to another tourney non-transferrable)!

HAND 1:
SB (me)  Ac Qc shove, same P2 limp calls with JJ
FLOP: Qxx
TURN/RIVER bricks, I double up.

2 hands later:
UTG P2 limps, button P5 shoves Ah 6h, P2 calls with KK trap
FLOP: Axx
TURN/RIVER bricks, P5 double up, P2 crippled
Soon after, P2 busted 9th place with JJ by AK, King on the turn.

ChipLeader 1 vs ChipLeader 2
CL1 raised, CL2 re raise to 10k
CL1 shove AK, CL2 calls with QQ
CL1 lost and crippled and busted soon after with 1400 blinds at 1600

Last 5 players:
seat 1 Boss
seat 2 CL2
seat 4 Me
seat 5 P5
seat 7 Last lady shortest stack

Boss is 2nd lowest stack but CL2 is a 'partner'

SB Boss BB CL2, UTG me Ad 8d flats
FLOP: 7 high, 2 diamonds
Boss bets 10k, CL2 folds (could have re raise and took me out of play)
I shove on nut flush draw, Boss insta calls and shows Kd 5d flush draw too!
no flush my ACE is good, boss is shock and out!

CL2 raised to 8k pre flop, I  flat with JJ wanting to see flop
FLOP: Jxx, I check he checks
TURN: X, I check, he shoves with bluff, I call
RIVER: X I double up again 2nd chip lead now.

SB CL2 limps, BB me Ac Qs checked option
FLOP:Qc 2c 2d, call 8k
TURN: 10c, CL2 checks, i bet 12k
CL2 raised to 40k, I shove he calls and shows 7c 5c flush
RIVER: Qd, I am now chip leader CL2 can not believe my accidental FH!

Lady had AA covering CL2, but both had no hearts and plays board of 5 hearts
I busted lady's shove of 77 from BB calling with J8 rivered 8.  Earlier we guaranteed moneyback to 4th from Champ's 5k

Next hand, BB P5, CL2 shoves, I folded SB K3o.  P5 calls with AA takes out CL2

HU hand#1, we re-structure cash (1st 5k 2nd 1.2k, P5 asked for 2.5k I keep 3.2k whatever happens) and play for championship.   I was 3.5-1 chip lead.
I shove Asp 6s he calls with 87 (as concession to me)
FLOP: 88x
TURN/RIVER bricks, P5 double up, I am still ahead 2.5-2 but P5 is now more formidable

Lost and folded a few pots, I am now covered but can still win with careful play. 40BB average with blinds still at 2400)

LAST HAND: BB Ad 10h, I limped
FLOP: A78, I checked he checks
TURN:X, I shoved, he calls with T9
RIVER: 6, I am out and P5 is champion

i think a donkey is a player who goes to a showdown calling with a very marginal hand like 7-2 preflop, with 8-3 off on a flop of A-K-J rainbow, 2-2 on a turn that  has a board reading K-K-Q-Q. for me there is no donkey call on the river.

PA calling a 3-bet with 3s 5s isn't a donkey for he has a plan to either outplay or outflop his foe.

A player is not a donkey if he calls an all-in bet of, say 2.5BB, with 3-2o, if he has 40BBs.

poker players do make donk calls or moves just a matter of when and how often.
